More About Phillis Wheatley
Phillis Wheatley was a slave who endured the transatlantic passage at approximately 7- years of age. She was sold to the Wheatley's for very little money because the auctioneers thought she wouldn't survive long due to illness. The Wheatley children taught her how to read and write and the rest is history. She published several poems and became the first documented female poet of African descent.
